MARKETING INSIGHTS
THOUGHTS ON THE INDUSTRY

When you think of your favorite brand, you know the one you trust, recommend, and maybe even spend a little too much money on, what makes you loyal to it over others? It’s not just the logo or a catchy tagline. Strong brands are built on a foundation of clarity, consistency, authenticity, differentiation, and connection. And the good news? You can create that for your business too.

TRAIT #1: CLARITY

Why:

  • If you confuse them, you lose them.

  • Strong brands know exactly who they are, what they offer, and why it matters, and they make sure their audience knows it too.

  • If your audience can’t explain what you do in a sentence, your message isn’t clear enough.

How to Develop It:

  1. Define your unique value proposition (UVP): Why are you different (and better) than competitors?

  2. Keep your messaging simple: If you need more than one sentence to explain it, it’s too complicated.

  3. Test it: Ask a friend or client to explain your business. If they struggle to explain it, simplify your message.

Example: Instead of saying: "We provide innovative solutions for sustainable home care."

Try: "We make non-toxic cleaning products that work."

Motivational Note:

Clarity isn’t about sounding fancy — it’s about being understood.

TRAIT #2: CONSISTENCY

Why:

  • Strong brands are consistent across every touchpoint, from the tone of voice to color palette to messaging.

  • Your audience should recognize your brand instantly, no matter where they see it.

  • If your brand looks different every time you run a new program, varies in other regions of the country, or your social media does not match your website and your emails, you’ve got a consistency problem.

How to Develop It:

  1. Create a brand style guide: Outline your logo usage, fonts, colors, and tone.

  2. Keep your tone consistent: If you’re conversational on Instagram, don’t suddenly get formal in your emails.

  3. Use templates: Using branded templates for social media, presentations, and emails will make your life easier and keep your look consistent.

Example:

Think about your favorite local coffee shop, where the vibe, menu, and music always feel familiar. That’s consistency. When your experience feels predictable in a good way, you trust the brand.

Motivational Note:

When your brand feels consistent, it creates a sense of comfort. And comfort builds trust.

TRAIT #3: AUTHENTICITY

Why:

  • People don’t connect with perfect, they connect with real.

  • A strong brand reflects the values and personality behind the business.

  • Don’t try to sound like everyone else. Own what makes you different.

How to Develop It:

  1. Remember “who” your brand is: Build your messaging by reflecting on your brand purpose, values, and your brand identity.

  2. Share your story: Why did you start this business? What problem are you passionate about solving?

  3. Show behind the scenes: Let people see the human side of your business.

  4. Speak directly to your audience: Talk to them like you would a friend.

Example:

Instead of: "We are proud to provide customer service of the highest quality."

Try: "We’re here for you. If you need help, just shoot us a message, we’ve got your back."

Motivational Note:

People are drawn to brands that feel human. Don’t be afraid to show the heart behind your business.

TRAIT#4: DIFFERENTIATION

Why:

  • If your brand sounds like everyone else, why would anyone choose you?

  • Strong brands know exactly what makes them different and they lead with it.

  • You don’t need to be the best at everything. Be the go-to for one thing.

How to Develop It:

  1. Identify your niche: What’s your unique angle?

  2. Focus on what you do differently: Pricing, customer service, product quality, mission?

  3. Highlight it in your messaging: Don’t assume people will figure it out on their own.

Example:

Instead of: "We source coffee from small farms and donate 10% of profits to rainforest preservation."

Try: " We work directly with small farmers and hand-roast every batch — so you get fresh, sustainable coffee that supports local communities."

Motivational Note:

You don’t have to be different in every way, just different in a way that matters to your audience.

TRAIT #5: CONNECTION

Why:

  • People buy from brands they feel connected to.

  • Strong brands don’t just communicate — they build relationships.

  • If your audience feels seen and understood, they’ll become loyal customers.

How to Develop It:

  1. Create content that speaks to their needs: Focus on how you solve their problem.

  2. Respond to comments and messages: Engagement builds trust.

  3. Make them feel part of your brand: Ask for feedback, feature customer stories, build a community.

Example:

Instead of: "Our mission is to provide high-quality fitness gear."

Try: "We get it, finding gear that fits and feels good isn’t easy. That’s why we designed this line with you in mind."

Motivational Note:

Connection happens when your audience feels heard. Show them you understand what they need.

Building a strong brand isn’t about having the biggest budget — it’s about knowing who you are and showing up consistently for your audience. Get these five traits right, and you’ll build a brand people trust and remember.

Small Businesses Deserve Big-Brand Strategy

There's something truly special about small businesses. They're personal, passionate, and driven by people who put their hearts into what they do. But what I have seen time and time again is that small business owners are stretched thin - juggling daily operations, customer service, financials, and yes, marketing.

Marketing isn't just one more task on your list - it's the key to sustainable growth. But I know from experience that most small business owners don't have the time, resources, or training to build a full-scale marketing strategy. They need guidance, structure, and solutions that actually work.

When I started Lot 52 Marketing, after years of working in marketing for large corporations and agencies, I found that my work with smaller businesses was so rewarding and fulfilling. That's why Lot 52 Marketing provides more tools and resources for small businesses and why I invented the Brand Blueprint Series. From Fortune 500 to Small Business Success

I've spent over 25 years in marketing, working for and with some of the largest companies in the world. While leading large-scale campaigns, I saw firsthand what separates successful brands from those that struggle - clarity, strategy, and consistency.

But here's the thing...you don't need a Fortune 500 budget to create a strong marketing strategy. You just need the right framework. That's where the Brand Blueprint Series comes in.
